There was recently much media coverage of a legal dispute between the University of Alabama and LeBron James’ media company, Uninterrupted. Both the University and Uninterrupted debuted web series featuring sports figures talking in a barber shop.
LeBron James’ show “The Shop” started last year, whereas the University of Alabama premiered their show “Shop Talk” in April 2018. Uninterrupted sent a cease and desist letter to the University of Alabama, alleging that “Shop Talk” violated its intellectual property rights.
It appears far from clear that Uninterrupted would ultimately have been successful in a copyright suit because the concept of an interview show set up in a barber shop is not new, and there are enough differences between the shows to distinguish them. The names of the shows “The Shop” and “Shop Talk” are similar.
The University of Alabama made a savvy in choice in quickly choosing to rebrand their show as Bama Cuts. In doing so, they significantly reduced their chances of being sued by Uninterrupted, which would now have to make an even more difficult case. Since “Shop Talk” had only just debuted, it was not as difficult to rebrand as it would have been months from now after negotiations.
