The Registrar of Trademarks had previously extended all deadlines for trademark matters in Canada until April 1, 2020. This relief has now been extended further to May 1, 2020. The mechanism for taking this exceptional step is found in Section 66(2) of the Trademarks Act, which allows the Registrar to declare additional days as designated days, meaning that the deadline falls on the next day that is not a designated day. Designated days are generally weekend days and holidays, but this unprecedented step will move all deadlines falling from March 16 to April 30 until May 1st. The Office has also indicated that they will provide further updates and may extend this date again.
