The Registrar of Trademarks has extended all deadlines for trademark matters in Canada until April 1, 2020. The mechanism for taking this exceptional step is found in Section 66(2) of the Trademarks Act, which allows the Registrar to declare additional days as designated days, meaning that the deadline falls on the next day that is not a designated day. Designated days are generally weekend days and holidays, but this unprecedented step will move all deadline falling from March 16-31st to April 1st. The Office has also indicated that they will provide further updates and may extend this date again, and we anticipate that it will likely be extended.
